During this session, the Shoptalk team will introduce a series of new scenarios through which the framework can now be viewed. Shoptalk will assess how retail is set to change in (1) an Optimistic Scenario in which social distancing, testing and contact tracing prove effective, and in which therapeutic treatments and/or a vaccine become available sooner than expected, (2) a Pessimistic Scenario in which there is little progress in all of these areas, and (3) a Recurrence Scenario in which there are future waves of the virus.
The discussion will be followed by a conversation with a leader of a biotechnology company who will provide perspectives on the potential timing and effectiveness of therapeutic treatments as well as a vaccine for COVID-19.
As stores continue to reopen and shoppers cautiously return, the retail world they’re reentering has changed dramatically. To ensure that shopping and work spaces remain safe--and to reassure nervous customers--retailers will need to transform their store policies, processes and layouts while also adapting to new shopping habits and behavior. It will not be a linear path. Some retailers will figure out how to both assuage consumer fears and drive up sales, but many will struggle. In this session, Shoptalk will conduct three 10-minute interviews with leaders at three different retailers to highlight how each of them has approached store reopenings and what they’ve learned about what does and doesn’t work as they strive to win over COVID-wary shoppers.

During this session, the Shoptalk team will provide an update to the Shoptalk Retail Framework for COVID-19 based on recent data and analysis related to changing consumer behavior. This update will look at how the new era in retail is being shaped by shoppers transformed by the COVID-19 experience.
The update will be followed by a conversation with a leading expert on emotional responses and consumer behavior who will address the impact of the pandemic on how consumers are currently making lifestyle choices and purchase decisions, as well as how the pandemic will shape their behavior long term.
Brands’ and retailers’ digital transformations were underway well in advance of the pandemic, but nothing drove ecommerce forward as quickly as COVID-19: some estimates had ecommerce penetration in the US rising from 16% to 27% over the course of just eight weeks in March and April. The transition has been inconsistent across categories, however, with retailers facing both surging and plummeting demand. In this session, a Shoptalk interviewer will conduct three rapid-fire interviews with retailers to discuss what specific digital technologies they’re investing in, how COVID-19 has affected their staffing and spending, and what changes they’ve had to make to their digital organization and operations during the pandemic.
