Loyal to Loyalty Rewards Mar 20, 2022 by HG O’Connell
You might say my dedication to loyalty programs started young. Beckoned by the lure of a pizza party for the class that collected the most Box Tops for Education (a General Mills program that provided funding to schools based on how many box top clippings kids brought in), I became an avid consumer of Trix and Cocoa Puffs. When my 4th grade class won the mythic pizza party, I was hooked on the concept of loyalty and rewards.
Making Smarter Merchandising Decisions Mar 13, 2022 by Deb Sperling
Over the past few years, I’ve become a lot pickier about where I shop. Instead of choosing the closest, trendiest, or most affordable option, I’m drawn to the brands and retailers I can depend on to keep their racks and shelves stocked with high-quality goods that cater to my preferences. For clothes, I head to Athleta, where sizes XL and larger are reliably available and prominently placed. I buy groceries at Wegmans, where I know I can always get the exact flavor of hummus I’m craving.
Consumer Expectations Reshape Retail Delivery Mar 6, 2022 by Rocquan Lucas
Many share my love for delivery and its benefits. According to a study from Lending Tree, from July 2020 to July 2021, 77% of Americans used on-demand delivery services. The same study reports that 70% of US consumers are willing to pay additional fees for groceries to avoid traveling to the store. The popularity of Amazon Prime strongly suggests that customers are OK with paying a significant premium for faster, “free” delivery as well.
The Future is Now for Sustainable Packaging Feb 27, 2022 by Rebecca Sausner
A sustainability confession: As a consumer, I’m often full of remorse over the food, personal care, Amazon boxes and other packaging waste that I produce in the course of my urban life. I make solid efforts at refilling, reusing, recycling and composting, but the guilt comes from knowing how much still ends up in a landfill.
In-Store Tech for a Human Touch Feb 21, 2022 by Deb Sperling
The other day, I was at the mall with a date who needed a new pair of boots. He kept pacing around the Timberland store, picking up and putting down the same three pairs, repeating the same series of questions to me and the saleswoman without ever listening for the answers. As my date made me tell him for the 17th time that I preferred the black ones over the brown, the saleswoman shot me a barely perceptible maternal eye-roll: You sure about this guy? Her look said. Or do you need me to give him a swift, steel-toed kick in the pants?
Resale and Recommerce Gain Momentum with Major Brands Feb 13, 2022 by Rebecca Sausner
It’s important to note the online resale market isn’t new but newly hot. Last year the dam seemed to break when dozens of national and international retailers began helping customers buy and sell used products. Among the retailers and brands now offering some form of resale are REI, Patagonia, Nordstrom, Levi Strauss, Lululemon, Madewell, Farfetch, Fabletics, Crocs, Adidas, Gucci, Neiman Marcus, The North Face, Oscar de la Renta, Cotopaxi, H&M, Macy’s and JCPenney.
Strengthening Your Relationship With Customers Feb 7, 2022 by Rocquan Lucas
With today’s consumers having limited time and short attention spans, brands are challenged with finding engaging ways to interact with customers and make their communications meaningful. Here are a few of the approaches retailers and brands are adopting to build stronger customer relationships and drive brand loyalty.
Metaversal Truths Jan 31, 2022 by Krystina Gustafson
Is the metaverse the biggest marketing and commerce opportunity of 2022, or the biggest bubble waiting to burst? It depends who you ask. In reality, though, the answer is far more nuanced.
Retail’s Big Comeback Jan 23, 2022 by Rebecca Sausner
People who live in places where Omicron spiked early are beginning to view the variant in the rearview mirror. At the same time, the Shoptalk team is hearing from speakers, exhibitors and attendees that, especially in light of recent industry events severely impacted by Omicron, they are eager to return to in-person events. They’re tired of virtual and hybrid events, and they see Shoptalk as the industry’s big comeback moment.
Leveraging AI to Unlock the Promise of Personalization Jan 16, 2022 by Joe Laszlo
I’m always challenged to identify specific examples of great personalization. The best implementations of personalization tend to be invisible. Shopping is intuitive, easy and you just find the things you’re looking for faster. Bad personalization efforts, by contrast, stick out, noticeable for all the wrong reasons.
The Rise of Retail Media Networks Jan 9, 2022 by Karin Annus
The rapid rise of retail media networks is expected to continue in 2022 as consumers shift more of their spending online, retailers seek new revenue streams, and brand advertisers look for new ways to track customers ahead of changes to third-party cookie policies.
BNPL Becomes Table Stakes, But Smart Moves Can Offer Competitive Advantage Jan 4, 2022 by Rebecca Sausner
Let’s set the scene with some numbers: There were about 45 million active BNPL users in the U.S. in 2021, according to research by Accenture, commissioned by Afterpay, with spending reaching 2.4 percent of ecommerce sales. One-third of all Americans will make a purchase using a BNPL provider in 2022, including 44 percent of Gen Zers, according to eMarketer forecasts.
The Road to a More Resilient Supply Chain Dec 12, 2021 by Rocquan Lucas
A few weeks ago, while I scarfed down turkey, my mother urged me to finish my Christmas shopping as soon as possible. “If you don’t order everything now, your gifts for me won’t get here in time,” she shouted. Just a year or two ago, a supply chain discussion making its way to my family’s Thanksgiving dinner table would’ve been unthinkable, but at least it beats heated political discussions.

Smart, passionate and successful women leaders have guided me through every stage of my career. From my very first job as a reporter at CNBC, to my transition to Shoptalk four and half years ago, I’ve always reported into women leaders who have challenged and championed me.
