Shoptalk’s All-Women Speaker Lineup: 3 Weeks In & 120+ Incredible Speakers So Far

Dec 4, 2019 by Zia Daniell Wigder

Three weeks ago, on November 13, 2019, we announced that we are shifting to 100% female speakers for Shoptalk 2020, with parity in our speaker lineup in future years. At the time of our announcement, we had over 30 women and 60 men confirmed to speak, and knew we had our work cut out to get to our total of 250+ female speakers.

One of the most common questions we were asked when we made the announcement was, “Isn’t it going to be really difficult to find enough senior-level women to fill more than 250 speaking spots at your event?”

While it certainly takes much more effort to assemble an all-female speaker lineup than it does to assemble one that skews male, we believe it is achievable, and at Shoptalk we’ve never shied away from a challenge when we felt an important step needed to be taken. Indeed, we believe that as a preeminent event in retail, it’s our responsibility to lead the industry in this way. We hope our precedent will remove the excuse event organizers consistently use, that there just aren’t a sufficient number of qualified women to achieve parity among speakers.

We believe that in the retail industry, there are not only enough female leaders to reach parity, but that there are also more than enough to fill an entire roster of speakers without compromising the quality of the lineup in any way. In fact, as we prepare for our 5th Annual Shoptalk in 2020, our speaker lineup is shaping up to be one of the best we’ve ever had. To be clear, we haven’t picked women to speak just because they are women--we have picked individuals who are entirely qualified as speakers given their professional roles, experiences and contributions. We’re confident in saying, as we have every year of Shoptalk, that our 2020 speaker lineup is the best in the industry.

So, with the momentum that is already building, we’re thrilled to announce that just three weeks after we embarked on our latest mission, we’ve already confirmed over 120 amazing women as speakers for Shoptalk 2020--and 75% of these women are speaking at Shoptalk for the first time. We’ve had incredible support from the industry in securing these speakers, including from the 60+ men who had been confirmed, a majority of whom identified female candidates to replace them on stage. Our speakers are leaders across every part of retail, including the seven areas below.

  1. Innovative retailers. Our speaker lineup includes a range of C-level executives from top retailers. In 2020, we’ll welcome industry leaders such as:
