Matthew E. Rubel
Board Member, Hudson's Bay/ HSNi
Mr. Matthew E. Rubel is a renowned retail CEO and influencer, having led many successful global brands and businesses. He currently serves as an Independent Director at Hudson’s Bay Company, HSNi and SUPERVALU, and became a Presidential Appointee to the House Advisory Council on Trade Policy Negotiation in 2010, a service he continues to fulfill today.
Most recently, Rubel served as CEO, President, and Board Member of Varsity Brands, the number one provider of sport spirit and achievement product in the U.S., which he strategically focused and integrated, while bringing it to record profits and sales. Previously, Rubel served as Chief Executive Officer and President of Collective Brands, Inc., which included his role as Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President of Payless Inc., which saw the acquisition of brands including Sperry Topsider, Saucony, Stride Rite and Keds. Prior roles also included when he served as the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Cole Haan LLC from February 1999 to July 2005, when he transformed the company into a global lifestyle brand celebrating American luxury. Prior to joining Cole Haan, Rubel served as an Executive Vice President of J. Crew Group and Chief Executive Officer of Popular Club Plan, where he led its sale from J. Crew to Fingerhut. While at J. Crew Group, he was responsible for all licensing and international activities, as well as brand marketing. Early in his career, he served as President of the Specialty Division of Revlon, managing Revlon Inc.'s prestige cosmetic brands and Executive Vice President of Murjani International Ltd., where he was in charge of the Tommy Hilfiger businesses.
Mr. Rubel has been a director of numerous multi national retail companies and consumer brands. Currently, he is an Independent Director at Hudson’s Bay Company where he Chairs Governance and sits on the Compensation Committee. Mr. Rubel also sat on the acquisition committee for Saks Fifth Avenue. In addition, Rubel currently serves on the Board of HSNi, the holding company of HSN and Cornerstone Brands. He has been an Independent Director of HSNi since 2013, chairs the Governance Committee, and sits on the Audit Committee. He also has been an Independent Director at SUPERVALU, where Mr. Rubel served as a director while the company repurposed itself toward its core, chairing the Compensation Committee and the CEO Search Committee. In addition, Mr. Rubel served as a Board Member at ELF Cosmetics and Furniture Brands. In the area of early stage technology and retail companies, Rubel has served as an advisor to Celect Inc, Retail Next, First Insight and Edible Communities.
He is active in several industry and civic organizations, including the Jay H. Baker Initiative at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania the Young President's Organization, Chairman of the FDRA, ICSC Board Member, NRF Board Member, President's Council Member at the University of Miami, The University Of Miami School of Business Board, and the Board of the American Ballet Theatre. Over the years, he has served on other notable civic boards including The Gulf of Maine Research Institute, The Portland Museum of Art, and the Waynflete School. Mr. Rubel holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio University and an MBA from University of Miami in 1980.
